Wanneroo City’s men’s State League team is facing its biggest month in recent history, charged with rescuing a poor season and preserving their semi-pro status. It all starts with a huge game against second-bottom Swan United tomorrow.
With three games to go, the Roos lie bottom of the league, but only six points separate the bottom four teams. Head coach Howard Tweats says there are a few injuries lingering in the squad, but the focus must be on what happens on field.
“From a season that’s had many trials and tribulations, there will be nothing bigger for the players than these remaining three games,” he says.
“The table doesn’t lie. Our campaign has been far from our expectations.”
After a heavy 4-1 defeat to high-flying Kalamunda City last weekend, Wanneroo must make every match count.
“The positive second half showing (last weekend) is the minimum standard we have to deliver in the remaining 270 minutes of football,” says Tweats. “There are no rewards for competing at the foot of the table, but in the context of the club’s status, these three games have great significance.”
Goals have been at a premium for the Roos, having scored the fewest goals in the division. But with pouring rain and heavy winds forecast for the weekend, a single goal may be enough to tip the scales in Wanneroo’s favour.
The Roos face Swan United away at 3pm tomorrow, before another six-pointer against third-bottom Carramar at home a week later. Get to the games and support our lads in a huge finale to the season.
