Jason Winter says culture is everything, as he looks to rebuild Wanneroo City after relegation last season.

The new Head Coach believes a team-oriented approach is crucial if the club is to return to the State League at the first attempt.

“The biggest thing is culture – getting lads playing for each other,” he says. “If we can do that, the rest will look after itself. I’m actually not concerned with winning or losing, especially early in the season. I want to get them all playing for each other.”

Winter says he’s excited by the prospect of leading a club like Wanneroo City, which boasts some 800 registered players across 40 teams, a strong youth set up, and great facilities.

“I’ve always wanted to coach a club like Wanneroo,” he says. “It’s a big club, fantastic facilities, and it’s a club that’s keen to progress and I’m looking to do that too. I did sit down with another couple of clubs, and had a chat about next season, but this one really appealed to me. They also wanted (assistant coach) Kev (Flavin) on board, which was massive for me.”

Winter has been active in the transfer market already, signing nine players and re-signing four key players from our State League squad from 2025.

“Hard work and commitment wins you games, and of course we want to get some quality into the playing squad as well,” Winter says. “We had a 20-man squad last season at North Perth and that’s what we’re working towards here as well. We’ve done up a plan of players that we want, and positions – we’d love to have two for each position. We’re getting close but there are a few spots open.”

After winning the double at North Perth last season, Winter knows what it takes to win at this level. Winter says he wants the Roos to take the game to our Amateur Premier League opposition every week.

“A couple of things I do like is controlled aggression, but also when we’re in possession, ‘aggressive possession’. We want to play on the front foot.”
